This album is dedicated to the legacy of Dr. Nina Simone, one of the extraordinary griots (the West African word for “storyteller”) of our time. Her passion, fire, humor, anger, love and profound musical mastery echo in my heart and mind. She was one of the many storytellers who shared their lessons of life and truth through the sound and fury of the music…and who continue to light the way for others after they are gone. Dr. Simone recorded all but the last of these songs (and that one she probably sang back home in church as little Eunice Waymon of Tryon, North Carolina). I sing them in the humble hope of continuing the tradition begun by those before me.

NATALIE DOUGLAS
TO NINA...LIVE AT BIRDLAND
Cabaret star Natalie Douglas' second recording, is a sensational group of songs that Douglas puts her own inimitable spin on in an homage to one of her idols, Nina Simone. With her smoky, lustrous alto, Douglas enchants with sumptuous versions of "Forbidden Fruit," "You Can Have Him" and "His Eye is on the Sparrow," among others. It's a terrific disc that lives up to Douglas' fast-rising reputation as a jazz singer of serious note. (WBG)

NOT THAT DIFFERENT

I believe these songs speak to everyone. They celebrate our unique experience, our heritage as Americans and are gifts from our ancestors. While most of them are love songs, amongst them you’ll find humor, pain and even social commentary. The CD is entitled “Not That Different” because of the special place this song holds in my heart. It’s a beautiful love song, but its tale is about more than just romantic love. It spurs us on to remember that our hearts, our souls and our cores are more alike than they are different. I used to think God (in Her infinite wisdom) brought me this song so I could remind others. I now know She meant for me to sing it as a reminder for myself.
